by Trainer Adam Pangrac
Running can sometimes seem lonely. Logging hundreds of solo miles can be taxing on even the most enthusiastic runner. There are many reasons why the best runners in the world train in groups or on teams. I know that when I started running with others the miles started to go by faster and I found myself having more fun. Connecting with other runners is important because with it comes accountability, inspiration, camaraderie, and knowledge.
Accountability
It is tough to skip a workout when you know someone else will be there waiting for you. Likewise, everyday consistency is encouraged when you have teammates to report to throughout training. When the weather is less than ideal, like last weekend, it is extremely beneficial to know others are traversing the same terrain. Accountability is powerful, so ask other group members about their training and share how things are going for you.
Inspiration
It’s hard to not feel inspired at the finish line of any race. Watching others push themselves to their limit is what inspires me to do the same. When I hear about someone stretching themselves to their first 10 mile, double digit run, I get excited. As runners we know that it is hard work and dedication, not just talent, that generates greatness. When I feel exhausted or like there is no time left in the day, these stories are what get me out the door.
Camaraderie
I’ve found out that not even my closest family or friends understand why I put in the miles that I do. They don’t get why I would give up a night out for an early morning run or pay to register for a race. It makes perfect sense to runners who share the same lifestyle. In training, it is a comfort to have them to encourage you through the lows and celebrate the highs.
Knowledge
There is so much for us to learn from other runners and other runners have a lot to learn from us. We all have experiences that could potentially help others reach their goals. I feel like I learn something new every day and continually am trying to refine strategy. I have had the most success by comparing notes with others. When setting new goals, look to those who have already gone there. We can learn a lot from those who have accomplished that which we seek to accomplish.
Running is a lifestyle that brings people together. A simple illustration of this is in when I am out training and give a friendly high five to another runner. I don’t have to know them, we simply cross paths and understand we share something in common. I truly value our running community and fully believe in what FSR is doing. By joining a training group in this area, participating in local races, and shopping at our running stores, you too can connect with the vibrant FM running community. Thank you for putting in the miles so that we can all go farther.
